While the fake job scam industry in India has been thriving for decades, the last year has seen a spurt owing to pandemic-led job losses and desperation amongst job seekers. Job frauds in India continue to occur due to gullibility, ignorance, and desperation, which is why it is essential to know about the various types of job scams around you.

Types of Job Scams

There are various ways by which fraudsters will try to get to you with a lucrative fake job offer. The plan behind the scam is simple:

  1. Reach out to gullible, desperate job seekers.
  2. Convince them to make a payment such as a job application fee or a security deposit after selection confirmation.
  3. Disappear with the money and become untraceable.

Here are the three major ways in which every such job scam in India occurs:

  1. ‘We’re reaching out from a reputed job portal with an offer from a company’ – Fraudsters pose as recruiters from Naukri.com, Monster, Shine, etc. specially hired by a company for recruitment. They contact the victim via SMS, email, ad, or call, eventually convincing the victim to appear for an interview and deposit some money to secure the job.
  2. ‘Get this job in exchange for money' – In such online scams or offline job frauds, the fraudsters pose as representatives of a company and often use the victim’s desperation for a job to convince him/ her to pay money for a final selection letter.
  3. ‘Here’s an offer letter for you’ – This is one of the major online frauds in India where fraudsters will issue a fake offer letter to the victim on email, often with very believable details. The uninformed victim cannot spot the fake details in the letter or doesn’t try to verify the details out of desperation, thus giving in to the demands of the fraudsters.

How to protect yourself

Many fraudsters use Bajaj’s name to carry out job-related offline or online scams in India. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • All Bajaj vacancies on job boards are always posted on our behalf – though, at times, Naukri.com might call you on our behalf
  • Bajaj never charges money for any recruitment-related activities
  • Always check for spelling mistakes, verifying the details and designations of signatories, logos, etc. on any offer letter you receive in our name
