The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a maternal health initiative within the framework of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). Its primary goal is to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates by encouraging institutional deliveries among economically disadvantaged pregnant women.

The scheme was launched on April 12, 2005, by the Honourable Prime Minister. This program is being executed across all states and union territories, with particular emphasis on states with lower performance in healthcare indicators.

The Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) integrates cash assistance with delivery and post-delivery care. It is a 100% centrally sponsored scheme. The Yojana has designated the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) as a crucial link between the government and pregnant women. The scheme's success will be gauged by the rise in institutional deliveries among poor families.

Benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY)

Here are some key benefits of Janani Suraksha Yojana that you should know.

The program specifically targets economically disadvantaged pregnant women, with special considerations for states exhibiting low rates of institutional deliveries. Based on this criteria, the states are divided into two categories:

  • LPS: This stands for Low Performing States. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Rajasthan, Orissa, and Jammu and Kashmir fall in this category due to low rates of institutional deliveries.
  • HPS: This stands for High Performing States. All the other states, other than the ones that fall in the LPS category, come under the umbrella of HPS.

Every beneficiary registered under this program needs both a JSY card and a Maternal and Child Health (MCH) card.

The Anganwadi worker (AWW), ASHA, or another recognised link worker should develop a micro-birth plan with the oversight of the Medical Officer (MO) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM).
